Episode 58: About freedom, with Elissa

podcast Oct 08, 2020

What does freedom mean to you?

This month on the podcast, our theme is Freedom. Now, the United States of America purports to be a country founded on this ideal. But what I’ve come to realize is that in practice, the brand of freedom we tout here in the USA is “I do what I want.” This is not a freedom that uplifts others.

It's time to step out of the zero-sum game we've agreed to and build a reality around true freedom that elevates the collective. As Nelson Mandela said: “For to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.”

Show Notes:

Recap

  • 0:00 - It’s a big deal to choose themes these days. Our theme this month is Freedom.
  • 3:41 - Elissa answers what freedom means to her. It’s about growth, possibility, and expansion. But here in America, we’ve taken freedom to mean “I do what I want!”
  • 6:06 - Truth exists in a paradox. We can have our truth and there can also be the truth.
  • 6:52 - We do our first of two Voice Body Connection Process check-ins in the episode. Elissa notices a feeling of contraction in her body, and desires to expand instead.
  • 11:15 - Freedom is also a paradox. We can have our freedom and that can elevate the freedom of all those around us. What we have to ask is: What is our freedom for?
  • 16:23 - Remember when we first heard the term “alternative facts?” The danger of coming up with our own facts is that the human brain is highly suggestible. Even if the statement isn’t true, our brain absorbs the information. This is how and why propaganda works.
  • 22:30 - A second Voice Body Connection Process check in. This time Elissa notices an expanding feeling, like she’s cracking open.
