✔︎ a voice teacher looking to re-energize your teaching, and go deeper in your understanding of the physiology of the voice
✔︎ or a singer wanting to understand your instrument better so you can take your vocal performance to the next level an actor who wants to speak with more freedom and ease
✔︎ or a public speaker curious to understand how to use your voice more fully
We’ll draw upon singing pedagogy, theatre voice techniques, speech science, yoga, somatic movement practices, and anatomy to expand your ways of thinking about the voice.
How Your Voice Works is the best vocal training I have ever experienced! Elissa is extremely knowledgeable and articulate, able to distill huge amounts of wisdom into really clear and useable teachings. I purchased the class hoping to gain more insight on vocal anatomy. It delivered in that respect, but what I am most excited about is what I was able to un-learn. I now have more trust in my connection to the natural engineering of the human voice and I'm way less conscious about my technique as I perform. I find myself letting go more and more and experiencing a new level of freedom, range, and power. Singing has never been more fun or freeing!
How Your Voice Works is a brilliant, holistic program that is set up to build from a strong base -. Each week you will build your knowledge and understanding until you reach your final goal: a beautiful, strong and healthy voice. As an amateur singer, I had reservations about joining a class which in my mind was for professionals. I quickly learnt that everybody struggles with some aspect of their voice and everybody can learn something more. I walk away from this class with more confidence in my instrument, knowledge that will carry me on my singing journey and an even stronger desire to continue my vocal studies.
Elissa is a master at demystifying this “scary” thing called, the voice. She is incredibly knowledgable about her craft, and her teachings are practical and direct. On top of that, she is innately kind, supporting, and encouraging. How Your Voice Works class is the real deal!
Elissa is a kind and positive teacher. She is knowledgeable and at the same time open to hearing everyone’s opinion. The course is structured in an organic way with passionate guests along the way introducing very powerful tools such as meditation and yoga. I encourage everyone who wants to learn more about their voice and meet people that are working in the same direction to follow this training.
I absolutely loved the course and found it to be the perfect "next step" for me in refining my teaching and reinforcing my knowledge. I feel so inspired and I love having new thoughts and ideas from which to teach that have been ignited by How Your Voice Works!
To answer, you'll learn the seven steps of communication:
The seven modules of the course go into detail about each step of the progression:
Module 1, IMPULSE:
You’ll learn about how your impulses work and how to follow them with more ease.
Module 2, BODY:
You’ll learn how your body can freely and dynamically support your sound, and how to break patterns of tension and rigidity.
Module 3, BREATH:
You’ll learn how to breathe to support your voice and speech more effectively, and finally understand how your diaphragm works!
Module 4, SOUND:
You’ll learn about your vocal cords and how to release tension in your throat.
Module 5, RESONANCE:
You’ll learn why your voice is unique to you and how you can change your sound.
Module 6, ARTICULATION:
You’ll learn how speech sounds are made so you can articulate more clearly.
Module 7, LANGUAGE:
You’ll learn how to communicate authentically and dynamically, so your audience understands your message better.
Knowledge is one thing... but being able to embody that knowledge? That's the important part! Each module is accompanied by two exercise videos to put your learning into practice. We'll cover these exercises and more when we meet each week.
Each module also includes an interview with a guest expert - a leader in the field of voice, speech, or movement. Check out the incredible line up of guest speakers below.
Moving through the course with support from Elissa and a group of your peers is the best way to learn! (These live classes only open only twice per year in the fall and spring).
And we bet you're gonna love it. We'll be looking at pictures of your diaphragm and abdominal muscles and videos of your vocal cords. Why? It's this simple: when you understand how the things work, you can use them better.
We all live busy lives! The pre-recorded portion of How Your Voice Works is designed to be manageable so you can uplevel your voice starting today! The core content is ~4 hours total (each module is 15-30 minutes long plus two exercises per module). Come back and revisit the videos whenever you like... when you enroll you’ve got lifetime access!
We're consistently adding new bonus content to the course! You've got VIP access to voice tip videos and guest interviews as they are added.
